Clinical Applications
Dermatrol (HZ) is traditionally used to support:

  • Shingles (herpes zoster) outbreaks
  • Shingles with painful skin lesions and nerve irritation

Western Therapeutic Actions
Modern research perspectives suggest this formula may provide:

  • Antiviral effects to reduce the severity and duration of shingles
  • Anti-inflammatory action to calm redness and swelling
  • Analgesic support to relieve nerve and skin pain

TCM Therapeutic Actions
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this formula works by:

  • Draining damp-heat
  • Purging excess fire
  • Eliminating toxins
  • Strengthening underlying deficiencies to restore resilience

Recommended Dosage

  • Standard dosage: 4 capsules, three times daily during the course of infection
  • Begin therapy as soon as the earliest warning signs appear
  • For faster action, dosage may be doubled during the first two days
  • Discontinue use once the shingles infection has resolved

Cautions & Contraindications
Because this formula is bitter and cooling, it is not suitable for everyone:

  • May cause nausea or vomiting in those with sensitive digestion; taking with food may reduce discomfort
  • Not intended for long-term use — stop once symptoms clear

Nutritional Guidance
A nutrient-rich diet supports recovery and may help prevent recurrence:

  • Helpful nutrients and foods: garlic, L-lysine, calcium, magnesium, and vitamins A, B, C, and E. Whole grains, brewer’s yeast, fresh fruits, vegetables, and brown rice are also supportive.
  • Avoid:
    • Spicy, fried, or greasy foods
    • Foods high in L-carnitine (peanuts, chocolate, corn)
    • Shellfish and seafood
    • Foods rich in L-arginine, which may worsen viral activity
    • Pungent or aromatic spices/vegetables like chili pepper, mustard, basil, rosemary, cumin, leeks, onions, and wasabi

Lifestyle Instructions
Lifestyle choices can significantly influence the severity and duration of shingles:

  • Reduce or avoid known triggers such as stress, fatigue, and immunosuppressive conditions
  • Avoid direct skin contact — shingles blisters are contagious and can transmit chickenpox
  • Care for skin lesions: keep blisters clean and dry, and avoid scratching
  • Be cautious in gyms and public spaces where the virus can spread through contact (e.g., exercise mats)
  • Use cool or wet compresses for soothing relief
  • Refrain from alcohol and tobacco use, which can slow healing
