“Use these aids sparingly, combine them with proven lifestyle strategies, and gradually build healthier sleep patterns.”
📋 Clinical Applications
- Short‑term relief of insomnia and acute anxiety when other measures (blood‑sugar balancing, magnesium, breathing techniques, etc.) have not been sufficient.
- Intended for PRN (as‑needed) use, not nightly long‑term therapy.
💊 Western Therapeutic Actions
These are two distinct options (not intended to be used in combination unless directed).
Bonine – Meclizine 25 mg
- Antihistamine with strong sedative effect; reduces vertigo, nausea, and can promote sleep.
Benadryl – Diphenhydramine 25 mg
- First‑generation antihistamine; blocks histamine receptors → drowsiness, helps with anxiety‑related tension.
⚠️ Important: Do not combine these with OTC pain relievers (acetaminophen/ibuprofen) in the same product.
Common Lab Values (when reviewed with Dr. Skip)
- Serum Histamine – Elevated levels may suggest a stronger response to antihistamines.
- Liver Enzymes (ALT/AST) – Monitor if using repeatedly; antihistamines are metabolized hepatically.
- Renal Function (eGFR) – Adjust dosing if eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m².
(Discuss any abnormal results with Dr. Skip or your clinician before using these agents.)
🈶 TCM Therapeutic Actions
- Both ingredients are considered “calming” in Traditional Chinese Medicine, helping to quiet the Shen (spirit) and balance the Heart‑Kidney axis.
- Used to alleviate “Shen disturbance” that manifests as insomnia, irritability, and anxiety.
📏 Dosage
Night‑time insomnia
- Take 1 tablet (25 mg) 30 minutes – 1 hour before bedtime.
- If needed, a second tablet may be taken up to a maximum of 50 mg total.
Break‑through daytime anxiety
- Take 1 tablet (25 mg) or ½ tablet of a 12.5 mg pediatric dose every 8‑10 hours as needed.
- Do not exceed 50 mg in a 24‑hour period.
General guidance
- Use for ≈30‑45 days to establish sleep‑hygiene habits, then transition to “as‑needed.”
- Aim to go to bed as soon as you feel sleepy; avoid staying awake doing chores after taking the medication.
⚖️ Cautions & Contra‑indications
- Never self‑prescribe or exceed the stated maximum dose.
- Contra‑indicated in:
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Known hypersensitivity to meclizine, diphenhydramine, or any antihistamine component
- Pregnancy (especially first trimester) without physician guidance
- Avoid driving, operating heavy machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness while under the influence of these sedatives.
- Do not combine with alcohol, other CNS depressants, or additional antihistamines.
Legal Statement: While these medications are over‑the‑counter (OTC), use only under the direction of a qualified healthcare professional. They must not be used without proper supervision. Valium, Xanax and Klonopin are prescription medications for anxiety with stronger potential for addiction with long-term side-effects, though may have their place, when necessary, as prescribed by your MD/DO.
🍎 Nutritional Guidance
- Include magnesium‑rich foods (leafy greens, nuts, seeds, whole grains) to support muscle relaxation and improve sleep quality.
- Limit caffeine after 2 pm to reduce nighttime arousal.
- Eat balanced meals with protein and complex carbohydrates to stabilize blood glucose, reducing “adrenaline dominance”‑related anxiety (see Progesterone usage below).
