Infertility is a very common problem and one we see all too often in holistic medicine. Many women have tried and exhausted tons of different avenues to try and combat related challenges. Frankly, they are usually mentally drained by the time they find us. This is understandably so as years of failed attempts at growing their families can be very taxing mentally, physically and financially. Through this infertility guide, we hope to answer questions you may have about infertility or natural fertility treatments. For further information on our approach and methods, please do not hesitate to contact us.
What is Infertility?
Infertility is generally suspected when a couple has gone 12 months of having unprotected sex and have still not become pregnant.
Infertility vs. Sterility – Sterility is the complete inability of a woman to conceive a child due to surgical intervention or biological and/or medical issues having rendered the women unable to get pregnant. Infertility is oftentimes an issue that can be changed with techniques like Mercier Therapy to restore blood flow and circulation to the pelvis and other female reproductive organs.
Number of women affected by infertility – While some of the statistics show overall infertility rates may have fallen somewhat since the 1980’s for a short time, newer data shows that clinically we are seeing drastic spikes. There is a rough estimation that over 6 million U.S. women alone are dealing with the unfortunate and very emotionally painful condition of not being able to conceive.
Causes of infertility
Inflammation and Pelvic Congestion
- Endometriosis – the inflammatory and autoimmune nature of this condition wreaks havoc on the body and mind. Patients deal with years of cramping, painful intercourse, lower back pain, pelvic pain and irregular periods. Inflammation must be gotten under control. Hormones must be balanced bio-identically, and proper nutrition must be restored for relief to be seen.
- PCOS or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is an accumulation of cysts in the ovaries. Cysts can also be present on/in/around the uterus as well. This is a very painful condition. These cysts can rupture while we are doing our pelvic work. This condition is often related to women with hormone and blood sugar imbalances.
- Nutrition: Diabetes/Blood Sugar Imbalances – Blood sugar imbalances will decrease and impair immune function. This must be taken as seriously as everything else to complete the picture and appropriately and effectively offer a viable chance to conceive. Consider eating lots of dark, leafy green vegetables, minimize/eliminate all dairy consumption to reduce phlegm accumulation in the body, eat small and frequent healthy meals containing good-quality protein throughout the day, every single day. Infertility triggers such as environmental and nutritional ones can be very instrumental in contributing to cases of infertility, i.e., heavy metals, artificial sweeteners, MSG, food colorings, food preservatives, medications, vitamin D deficiency, magnesium deficiency, iodine deficiency, thyroid and other hormonal imbalances stemming from the myriad of other toxic-laden factors we are exposed to often without our knowledge and in some cases, consent. Many cases of infertility can be tracked back to menarche when a woman’s cycle first begins. These unfortunate women had years and years of painfully debilitating cycles and were placed on birth control pills to “help” finding little relief. Something else to consider is to be certain you are consuming enough good fats. Do not eat frozen/canned/prepared foods from a box, drink plenty of water and AVOID no-fat/low-fat options – they are not healthy choices.
Conventional vs. Holistic Methods:
The most common of the conventional options you may be familiar with is known as IVF (In-vitro Fertilization). This is a value option when others have failed. Please do not allow this to be your first line of defense. This approach is probably the most aggressive. Its chances of success are lower with possible long-term ramifications on the body of the mother. Please remember Clomid as recommended by the manufacturers has a use for only 3 cycles. Many Reproductive Endocrinologists prescribe very high doses for very long-term use. This is not a good idea.
Look into safer and more effective options first (Mercier Therapy) before proceeding with the more harmful choices. There are always risk-to-benefit ratios to be considered. Please contact us to help you understand all of your options before proceeding. While you may feel you are on the clock with this, do not allow that stress to compound your issues. Take a deep breath.
Mercier Therapy for pelvic pain and infertility helps to restore blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. Alongside dietary changes, reducing exposure to toxins, stress management, yoga and balancing hormones the bio-identical way, are often just what the doctor ordered. Having a full, and I mean full, thyroid workup is critical as well.
Traditional in conjunction with holistic methods:
We work with Reproductive Endocrinologists, OB-Gyn’s and other healthcare practitioners in tandem as dictated by the need of the patient and their specific medical indications. An integrative team is a truly holistic approach and always offers the most comprehensive and effective solutions. Many doctors do not understand each of the aspects from the varying disciplines of medicine and holistic medicine. The integration is a passion of Dr. Skip’s and maximizing your chances using the integration approach is where we excel. Whether it is our therapy, IVF, both or something else all together, we can help you sort out and decide on what choices are best for you.
Methods we specialize in:
Visceral Manipulation of the abdomen, known as Mercier Therapy, is one of the primary modalities employed at our clinic for restoring blood flow to assist the body in optimizing function and removing blockages with cases of infertility and pelvic pain. To learn more about the Mercier Therapy please click HERE.
Our technique is non-invasive and does not involve any vaginal work. Everything we do can be accomplished topically on the abdomen. The technique can cause a bit of discomfort and in general is not painful. Discharge and occasional bruising over the areas worked is common. Please let us know if you have any IUD’s before we begin our work together.
Infertility Consultations for Couples
We highly recommend couples coming in together and optimizing their individual health together. While the men have no uterus, their involvement in the nutritional aspect can’t be discounted. This will help their sperm quality and overall health. Optimizing the bodies of both people involved is preferable.
Doing additional techniques together such as; stress reduction/meditation and massage will exponentially increase their likely hood of conception. The benefits of stress reduction on both people are crucial to the success of the outcome.
What if my uterus does not need to be repositioned?
In cases of infertility, mal-position of the uterus or not, it is still something that should be addressed in most all of the women who are experiencing fertility problems. The uterus is one of the primary organs affected and anytime you increase blood flow to an organ healing will occur and inflammation will reduce over time. So, whether our technique doesn’t work or isn’t indicated we always refer our patients out to the appropriate practitioner and continue to work together toward the goal of healing the body and achieving the pregnancy. It is about what is best for the patient, their health and family.
