Do I need Bio-identical Hormone Replacement?

Introduction: Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy is also known as BHRT. It is a simple fact that as we age our body does not produce the same hormone levels as in our youth.  Our hormones support the daily functions of our entire body and cannot be under-emphasized when optimal wellness and overall longevity is a goal.  For women in particular, a hormone imbalance can lead to infertility, painful or irregular menstrual cycles, migraines and a slew of other symptoms (see more information below).  If you are considering hormone replacement therapy  and are in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex we are here to help.

How do I know if I need Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy?

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms a simple lab test can ascertain if you have a hormone imbalance that needs to be corrected:

Are all hormone replacement therapies created equal?:

Absolutely not.  So many of the hormone replacement therapies available today are not bio-identical.  What does that mean?  Simply put, many hormone drugs available today are synthesized using, and sit down for this, things like horse urine and a barrage of other ingredients that the human body just simply doesn’t exactly know what to do with when introduced.  This is why you will find all sorts of disclaimers around hormone replacement that these have cancer risks and a long laundry list of side affects.  Whereas bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is what it sounds like. When properly monitored and prescribed are not only safe and effective, but have amazing results.  Please make sure you consult your physician before implementing any hormone replacement therapy.

Incorrect dosage, misuse or not the correct combination:

With everything in life there is an optimal balance and hormones are no different.  It is important for anyone who is considering hormone replacement therapy that your levels be monitored.  Too much of any particular hormone can actually increase painful periods, night sweats, cysts and vaginal dryness so that proper balance is crucial. Estrogen and Progesterone work in harmony with each other and often need to be given in concert.  A decent rule of thumb however, is that Estrogen should rarely be given without a balance of Progesterone, but there are several reasons that Progesterone can be given on its own.

Conclusion – Monitor Your Hormones:

If you want to be on the path of optimal wellness and feel your best, your health-care practitioner cannot avoid looking at your hormone levels, particular as we age or if you have any of the symptoms we discussed.  Unfortunately, monitoring these levels has not become the standard of care and labs can often be costly, even with insurance.  The offices of Dr. Skip has worked hard to get lab prices as low as possible in order to help you on your path to wellness via a lab cooperative.  Though this comes at a price in that we are unable to bill insurance, we are confident that the bottom line savings and benefit to you and your health is worth it.
